|
Henan, the most populous province of China, is expecting a grain harvest of 50.15 billion kilograms this year, a rise of 9.5 percent year on year, according to a forecast from the provincial agriculture department. The Henan Provincial Agriculture Department said, the province's acreage of crops totaled 9.3 million hectares this year, 149,000 hectares more than last year. As one of the major grain producers of China, Henan producers about one-tenth of the country's annual grain output. The province has adopted a series of policies to encourage farmers to grow crops to boost grain output. This year alone, the province earmarked approximately 3.045 billion yuan (380 million U.S. dollars) as subsidies for farmers to grow crops, buy grain seeds, farming machines and other materials in agricultural production. The province also exempted local farmers from agriculture tax totaling 2 billion yuan (about 250 million dollars). China began exempting farmers from agriculture tax last year. China is banking on a grain harvest of 490 billion kilograms this year, 6 billion kilograms more than last year, according to a forecast from the China Information Center of Grain and Oil. |
